TEACHER PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT UNIVERSE

tpd4.jpg

In School for Life's TPD Universe you can learn more about how to implement the Teacher Professional Development Model in your school.

The Teacher Professional Development model strengthen primary school teachers’ pedagogical skills, relational competencies and reflective teaching practice. When using the TPD model, schools can create a child-friendly environment that fosters active learner participation and critical thinking skills.

The TPD model is developed by the Northern Ghana-based civil society organization School for Life. The TPD model tested in public primary schools in deprived areas of Northern Ghana. It is applicable in all parts of Ghana, as the model aligns with Ghana’s National Pre-tertiary Education Curriculum.

WHAT IS THE TPD MODEL?

The TPD concept

Teachers' professional relational competence is at the center of the TPD model. It is one of the most determining for supporting the well-being and development of learners - academically, socially, and personally. Relational competencies require ongoing training, practice and reflection - and it is therefore an excellent course opportunity within continuing professional development (In service training). It is also relevant for student teachers and can be integrated into the Colleges of Educations’ courses relating to field practicum.

The TPD approach

The TPD model is relevant for institutions and organizations working with teacher professional development at the primary school level and it requires training to be able to use the TPD model. The training is designed as a 3-day whole-school training course that includes all teachers. This is to ensure that the model is used by all teachers and that colleagues can share their reflections and experiences. The training is broken down into 10 modules. All modules include practical exercises.

The Teacher Professional Development Model is a structured approach designed to enhance teacher competence, reflective practice, and student learning outcomes, particularly in underserved districts of Ghana. This step-by-step guide provides a clear pathway for implementing the TPD Model, starting with orientation and planning, followed by the training of trainers, in-service training for teachers and head teachers, and training for School Management Committees (SMCs) and Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs).

The process concludes with monitoring, review, and evaluation to ensure the model's effectiveness. By following these steps, educators and stakeholders can work together to create more child-friendly and effective learning environments, ultimately improving educational outcomes for learners.

The TPD Model is certainly a useful tool for the pre-and post-training of teachers. My recommendation is to incorporate it into the curriculum of the Colleges of Education.
